Bhubaneswar, Dec 31 (LocalWire): Senior Odia bureaucrat Pranab Kumar Das will join as chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on January 1 (Tuesday).
He will succeed S Ramesh, whose tenure ends on December 31.
He has been appointed as the chairman till April 30, 2020 and shall over see the crucial Goods and Services Tax (GST), customs reforms and trade facilitation initiatives .
Das, a 1983-batch IRS officer, was a member of CBEC since September 1, 2017.
He has spearheaded Government National Trade Facilitation Action Plan & Programme of improving Trading Across Border (TAB) parameters.
This had resulted in massive jump in World Bank’s ranking of India in TAB (146 in 2017 to 80 in 2018) and EODB (100 in 2017 to 77 in 2018).
Das had also assisted in smooth and successful rollout of GST.
The bureaucrat worked as Special Director, Enforcement Directorate(Hqr) (2004-9) & ensured smooth operationalisation of PMLA in India & India’s FATF membership.
He was nominated as expert to implement protocol on illicit trade in tobacco under WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in 2016.
