Berhampur, Nov 3 (LocalWire): A 40-year-old man and his 65-year old mother were arrested today for allegedly setting ablaze his pregnant wife at Debabhumi under Ganjam district’s Aska police station limits four days ago demanding dowry.
The 25-year-old victim Mamali’s mother lodged an FIR at Aska police stationagainst Tukuna Choudhury, a farmer and his mother Uma Panigrahy.
The woman is battling her life at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here with 80 to 90 percent burn injuries.
According to the complainant, Kuni Patra, a widow, Mamali was married off two years ago.
Patra had given Rs 40,000 cash and some gold ornaments to her daughter’s in-laws who were not satisfied and demanded Rs 80,000 more and allegedly tortured her daughter. They had even thrown Mamali out of the house last year.
On 29 October, Mamali had told a neighbor about the tortures.
Next day when Patra went to take back her, she was refused by her in-laws.
On 31October, her husband and mother-in-law poured kerosene on her and set her afire.
She ran out and was taken to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital by her mother.
‘We registered a dowry torture case against the husband and his mother based on the complaints by the victim’s mother,’ said inspector in charge, Aska police station, Prasant Kumar Sahoo.
While her husband and mother-in-law have been arrested and forwarded to court, investigation is on to find out if any other people are involved in the incident, he added.
