Jagatsinghpur, Dec 17 (LocalWire) The Odisha government’s PEETHA (People’s Empowerment – Enabling Transparency and Accountability) to ensure direct delivery of services to beneficiaries in panchayat level has been strongly protested by local people in several panchayats.
Sources said people, including elected representatives of Balikuda, Erasama, Raghunathpur and other areas of this district, have strongly protested this scheme due to political interference and lack of awareness due to negligence and alleged callous attitude of officials.
In Balikuda, irate people set fire on the pandal for organizing this scheme while elected representatives of different panchayats of Erasama block boycotted the PEETHA scheme.
Balikuda block has been taken all arrangements to conduct this programme in all panchayats.
“Lack of awareness, non-involvement of opposition party people for implementing this scheme and negligence of block officials have irked the villagers of different panchayats,” said a local.
Protesting it, irate miscreants set fire on tents and pandal at Adhanga panchayat of this block, which was decorated for organizing the PEETHA scheme.
Adhanga panchayat sarpanch Chimanyee Swain lodged an FIR in Balikuda police station against the miscreants.
The police said they have visited the spot and started investigation.
Despite protests, panchayat samiti chairman Madhusmita Sahoo inaugurated the PEETHA programme here amid tight security.
Meanwhile, Erasama panchayat sarpanch Gitanjali Sahoo, Krushandapur sarpanch Khulana Sundari Swain, Janakadeipur sarpanch Naramda Pal, Pokharipada sarpanch Runubala Swain, Pallikanata Sarpanch Dwajraj Khandual, Chatua panchyat samiti member Sujata Sethi, Dhinkia sarpanch Salila Nayak, Balitutha sarpanch Mili Nayak and others have boycotted the preparatory meeting of PEETHA scheme being organized by Erasama Block Development Officer (BDO).
These elected representatives have alleged nearly 13 panchayats of Erasama block have been ignored by block officials.
“Only by consulting some ruling party leaders, block officials have finalized lists of different projects. Even, block officials have not yet been communicated about PEETHA scheme,” alleged a panchayat member.
