Jagatsinghpur, April 27 (LocalWire): Scores of farmers, demanding pension and fair price, on Saturday courted mass arrests here after preventing poll officials from reaching their designated booths in protests.
The Navnirman Krushak Sangathan, which has been spearheading the farm movement, had staged a massive demonstration here today, demanding fair treatment from the government.
Police sprung into action after they lay down on the road outside the office of the returning officer to prevent poll personnel from transporting the EVMs and VVPATs to the polling booths.
This comes after a delegation of the farmers’ body had submitted a memorandum to the chief electoral officer on April 5, seeking permission to hold rallies against the election process.
The organisation has intensified its protests recently. The group had earlier sent a resolution adopted at a farmers’ meet to President Ram Nath Kovind, alleging that their wishes were ignored by the government.
Jagatsinghpur police station in-charge Rajanikant Mishra said, “A total 54 activists were arrested for preventing poll personnel from carrying out their duties but they were later released on a personal bond.”
