Bhubaneswar, Dec 4 (LocalWire): The CMD of MESCO group of industries was literally put under house arrest for more than 24 hours by protesting workers who demanded a revision of their wages in Kalinganagar Industrial Town in Jajpur district.
The workers of Maithan Steel unit staged a sit-in led by local MLA Preeti Ranjan Ghadei at the guest house where industrialist Rita Singh was staying although Singh has no stakes in Maithan Steel unit as it is owned by her daughter Sipra Singh, a prominent industrialist.
Rita was later rescued from confinement following intervention of civil and police administration.
‘After receiving report of the agitation, we rushed and held talks with the workers,’ Jajpur Superintendent of Police, Charan Singh Meena told LocalWire.
Refusing to comment on the report that she was kept confined in the guest house, he said, ‘the situation is normal now with the agitation being withdrawn. We have provided security to the industrialist.’
‘I could not move out from here (guest house) due to the workers’ strike. I was illegally confined. It does not augur well for Odisha’s industrial ecosystem.
My daughter Sipra Singh owns the unit and I have no stakes in the company.
Still on behalf of my daughter I promised the workers early settlement of their differences with the management,’ Rita later told reporters.
