Puri, May 3 (LocalWire): Several areas in Puri and neighbouring places have been inundated after Fani made a landfall around 8.00 a.m today.
Heavy rainfall with gusty winds at 175 kmph speed is lashing the coastal areas after the eye of the storm crossed the bay and entered the state.
The well-marked eye, which is the centre of the storm, is nearly 30 km wide. The ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ is expected to complete the landfall within three hours and is likely to move north-northeast and weaken into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ the IMD stated.
Though the process of landfall is expected to be over in a couple of hours, weather condition will remain the same till evening, the weather office said.
Large areas in Puri and other places were submerged with water as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state. Several trees were uprooted and thatched structures destroyed at some places including Bhubaneswar.
Puri is witnessing wind speeds of 142 kilometres per hour that could reach up to 180-200 kmph, Mritunjay Mohapatra, in-charge of the cyclone warning division, IMD, said.
