Bhubaneswar, July 20 (LocalWire): A rare yellow turtled was rescued on Sunday in Balasore district by local people, a senior official said on Monday.
One Basudev Mohapatra spotted the turtle while working in his fields and brought it home. Later, he handed it over to forest officials.
“It was an albino variety of turtle.,” senior wilf life officer and chief executive of Chilika Developement Authority Susanta Nanda told LocalWire.
“The forest department has kept it. When gene mutation of freshwater turtles takes place some of them are unable to produce pigments that make the colorization.
This is not an endangered or rare species. Similar freshwater species were seen in other places in South East Asia including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, India and Nepal,” he said.
