Balugan, Jan 5 (LocalWire): Chilika lake has housed a total of 10,47,968 birds of 181 species this winter, said a forest official on Saturday.
The largest brackish water lagoon in Asia has witnessed a remarkable rise of over 1.5 lakh winged guests this year that was recorded 8,93,390 of 147 species last year.
The presence of 10,21,563 waterfowls of 105 species and 26, 405 water dependent birds of 76 species have been recorded at Chilika as per the bird census concluded on Friday, said the official.
Similarly, the Nalanaba sanctuary has housed a total of 3,39,542 birds which was 3,20,826 last year.
The availability of open space after eviction of encroachment in and around the lake has resulted in increase of migratory birds in Chilika, added the official.
