Berhampur, Nov 19 (LocalWire) Rice mill owners of Ganjam are demanding to increase milling charge from Rs 10 to Rs 30 per quintal and to release arrear amount of around Rs 5 crore before starting of paddy procurement this year in the district.
The paddy procurement is scheduled to start from December 15.
The millers have submitted a memorandum to the state’s food and consumer welfare and cooperative minister SN Patro here recently.
“We have discussed our problem with the minister and requested to solve them before commencement of procurement of paddy this year,” said Ganjam District Rice Mill Owners’ Association (GDRMOA) secretary Santosh Sahu.
He said the government provided Rs 10 per quintal for milling charge of paddy. The rate was not revised since last two decades.
“Increasing milling charge is urgently needed as the tariff of electricity has changed during the period. Moreover, transport and labour charges have also gone up,” he said. “We demanded the milling charge should be fixed at Rs 30 per quintal of paddy.”
“Since the milling charge is fixed by the central government, we urged the minister, the state government should take up the matter with its counterpart,” he said.
“Patro has assured us to write to the union government for enhancement of milling charge,” said Sahu.
Millers have also demanded transfer of mandi (paddy procurement center) handling charge from the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) to the millers and to release price of new gunny bags purchased by the millersin the last two years.
“The gunny bags were supposed to be provided by the government. As the government did not provide gunny bags most of the times, millers had to purchase them on their own for timely transportation of commodity,” he said. The cost of gunny has not been reimbursed for last two years.
Moreover, security deposits of 53 millers in the district, which were pending with the government for the last ten years, should be released immediately, the association demanded.
The security deposit of each miller was Rs 25,000.
