Bhubaneswar,Nov 2 (LocalWire) Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the state schools and mass education department to pay Rs 30,000 compensation to a Dalit student who was denied to sit at the high school certificate (HSC) examination four years ago.
He was not issued admit card by authorities of Pallahara Mehtab High School in Angul district on the ground that the 10th standard student had failed to clear the pending dues of a private mess.
As a result, the boy could not appear the HSC examination in 2015, a petition moved by rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo and Bijoy Kumar Panda alleged.
The rights panel disposing off the petition on November 1 ruled that the victim boy was subjected to mental harassment. Therefore, the boy is entitled for payment of compensation by the government.
The department is at liberty to collect the compensation sum from the school headmaster’s salary and disburse the same to the victim, the rights panel ruled.
