Bhubaneswar, October 12 (LocalWire): Enforcement squad of the election commission seized Rs 3.50 lakh on Saturday at the Sarandapalli Chowk under Barpali police station in poll-bound Bijepur assembly constituency.
An SUV was intercepted and the cash was found stashed in a bag inside it.
One person identified as Sanjib Das, a native of Boudh district has been detained in this connection, enforcement squad officials said.
The seizure was made as per the guidelines followed during and before elections to check the possible flow of cash for inducing voters.
The cash was seized as its carrier did not carry authorisation letter to carry cash over Rs 50,000 during and before the poll. The source of the seized cash is being verified, officials said.
Flying and vigilance squads in joint coordination with police are keeping an eye to prevent illegal transportation of cash, liquor, drugs, and jewellery, the officials stated.
The Bijepur assembly by-poll scheduled for 21 October will see 2,32,005 voters exercise their rights in 285 polling booths.
The by-poll in Bijepur assembly seat in Bargarh district was necessitated after chief minister Naveen Patnaik resigned from the seat to retain the Hinjili assembly segment in Ganjam district.
