Bhubaneswar, April 13 (LocalWire): Festive fever grips Odisha capital as the famous Rukuna Jatra of Lord Lingaraj began here today. The festival, also known as Ashokashtami, is observed on the eighth day of the month of Chaitra as per Hindu calendar, when the moon is in a waning phase.
Thousands of devotees throng the Lingaraj temple here to pull the Lord Lingaraj’s chariot. The festival starts with “Mangala Arati” and is followed by Sahan Mela darshan.
As part of the ritual, devotees pull a four-wheel 35-feet-long chariot of Lord Lingaraj from the 11th century shrine to Mausima Temple.
One of the highlights of the festival is the auction of “Marichi Kunda”, the holy water which is said to cure infertility in women. Various arrangements are made for devotees during the ‘yatra’.
