Bhubaneswar, Sept 19 (LocalWire): A Special POCSO (Protection of children against sexual offences Act) court in Cuttack today sentenced to death sentence to a 29-year-old man for raping and murdering a six-year-old girl in a village under Salipur police station limits about a year-and-a-half ago.
The court found Mohammad Mustaq guilty under Indian Penal Code sections 376 a-b (rape on minor girl below 12 years of age), 302 (murder) and 363 (kidnapping) besides Protection of children against sexual offences Act, according to prosecution counsels.
The victim’s parents welcomed the verdict.
‘We feel relieved as justice has been served and the criminal sentenced to death,’ they said.
Mustaq had offered chocolates lured the girl and later raped her on 21 April, 2018.
The accused had then strangulated the child and left her unconscious to escape detection.
Locals had rescued the girl from the premises of a school and had shifted her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The victim had suffered injuries in her head, face, neck, chest and genitals.
Battling for life for over a week, she breathed her last on 29 April.
Repentant of the crime, Mustaq had later tried to hang himself in the jail toilet.
The rape and murder of the minor girl had triggered statewide furore with rights activists seeking capital punishment for the offender.
Odisha government had awarded Rs 5 lakh ex-grtatia to the bereaved family.
The rape of the girl child had also been tabled in the state Assembly.
