Bhubaneswar, Dec 3 (LocalWire)A captive female sambar, a rare species of deer, on Tuesday, gave birth to a fawn at Nandankanan zoological park in Bhubaneswar city.
The baby Sambar is in excellent health condition and is being nurtured by mother animal, zoo deputy director Jayant Kumar Das told LocalWire.
The enclosure where the new birth has taken place has been kept out of bounds for tourists as a precautionary measure. The zoo vets are also keeping a vigil on the mother-baby duo.
The 59-year-old Nandankanan, one of the premier large zoos of the country, houses 156 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
The Zoological Park together with the Kanjia lake and the Botanical Garden has been declared as Nandankanan Wildlife Sanctuary over an area of 4.37 sq.km on 1979.
