Jagatsinghpur, July 18 (LocalWire): As many as 70 sanitation staff (safai karamcharis) working for the Jagatsinghpur Municipality went on a strike and stopped their work in protest against the non-disbursement of their salaries for the past two months.
The karamcharis held a dharana in front of the Municipality office for the disbursement of their salaries.
Source said that the staff receive a meagre salary and that too is not disbursed in a regular manner.
The workers have alleged that while many times they have had to shift the decomposed bodies of dead animals in the line of duty, no protective equipment, sanitisers, soaps or gloves have been provided to them even during the pandemic.
They also alleged that their salaries have not been disbursed, and that they are paid only Rs 2000 every month.
The protesters said that while they have taken up the matter with higher authorities a number of times, no one has paid heed to their plight.
Executive Officer of Jagatsinghpur Municipality Bimal Kumar Lenka pacified the protesters and has assured them of release of their salary by the 5th of each month.
This month’s salary will be given on Monday. He also committed to fulfill their other demands, at which the irate staff called off their stir.
