Kendrapara, August 23 (LocalWire): The district administration has filed a case today against the Sarpanch, Panchayat Executive Officer and Gramya Rojagar Sathi (GRS) of Rajnagar Gram Panchayat on the charges of siphoning off around nine lakh rupees by not planting trees under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
It was found during an enquiry that the Sarpanch of Rajnagar Gram Panchayat Pravat Chandra Mishra, Panchayat Executive Officer Pravat Mallick and GRS Pramod Sahoo had siphoned off around nine lakh rupees by planting a lesser number of trees than that for which the funds were allocated, under the MGNREGA scheme in Rajnagar.
The authorities had granted Rs. 9,19,984 for planting trees by engaging local workers.
The tree plantation work began on June 22 this year. Out of the allocated amount, the Sarpanch and his accomplices allotted just Rs. 2,71,216 to pay wages to the workers.
Although on paper the money has been paid to the workers for planting trees, in reality, very few trees have been planted.
As per the direction of the collector, I have filed an FIR against the Sarpanch, Panchayat Executive Officer and GRS in Rajnagar police station.
Acting on the FIR, the police have filed a case against them under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) and section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC, said Mandardhar Mallick, the Block Development Officer of Rajnagar.
When contacted, Tapan Nayak, the IIC of Rajnagar police station said, “The police is investigating the case.”
The district administration suspended the Panchayat Executive Officer and GRS today for their involvement in the case.
We have recommended the Panchayat Raj department to suspend the Sarpanch for his role in the tree plantation scam, said Project Director of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) of Kendrapara, Dilip Parida.
