Jajpur, Oct 19 (LocalWire) The husband of a Sarpanch in Jajpur district was arrested today on charges of abetting the suicide of a woman Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) recently, police said.
The accused Rupesh Bhadra was booked under section 306 of IPC (Abatement of suicide) and produced before the local court which rejected the bail application and remanded him in jail custody, they said.
Bhadra’s wife is the Sarpanch of Haridaspur gram panchayat in the district. He had illicit relation with the PEO Smitarani Biswal (32) and allegedly abetted the suicide at his guest house at Charbatia on October 16.
The victim was depressed as they often used to have heated exchange of words over Bhadra’s insistence on her to live with him permanently though she was married and had a seven year old daughter.
“We collected evidence against the accused by examining the call records from their mobile phones”, said Charan Singh Meena, Superintendent of Police, Jajpur.
Earlier, Sushil Kumar Biswal, husband of the deceased had raised suspicion over the suicide.
But, preliminary investigations by the police had pointed to the possibility of suicide only, sources said.
Meanwhile, the district unit of BJP today called for Jajpur Bandh on October 21 alleging that the police officials were shielding many accused involved in the case.
