Bhubaneswar, Sept 5 (LocalWire): Solid waste management needs to be included in school curriculum for sensitizing children on environment protection, chief secretary Asit Tripathy said here today while reviewing the progress of waste management plans in urban local bodies.
The Odisha government has adopted a policy decision to involve households and waste management groups to do away with environmentally-hazardous solid wastes in urban local bodies, he said.
300 gram solid waste is let out per household everyday, which is less than the national average .
The state has 114 urban local bodies which accumulate 2575 tonnes of solid waste per day in the state.
A draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on decentralized solid waste management has been chalked out in accordance with solid waste management rules, 2016.
In order to facilitate its implementation, SOP has been prepared for implementation in ULBs, said officials.
For the effective treatment and processing of wastes, the ULBs have been directed to engage Swach Sathi volunteers who could emerge as the community link and act as change agents to bring about collective behavioural change in households.
