Kendrapara Feb 22 (LocalWire): A headmaster of a primary school in Kendrapada district was arrested on Friday on charges of alleged misappropriation funds meant for construction of the institute building and a toilet.
An official of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan said that Pradipta Kumar Parida embezzled Rs1.16 lakh out of Rs3 lakh when he served as the headmaster of Bandhapatana primary school in 2015.
The funds were provided under the universal elementary education programme. The official added that an FIR has been lodged against him in Rajnagar police station.
The police took him into custody after the Rajnagar judicial magistrate court rejected his bail application.
“We have also filed police complaints against seven other primary school headmasters of the district for misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs22.83 lakh,” Kalpana Behera, the district project coordinator of Sarva Sikhya Abhijan, said.
The record of school sanitation is dismally low in Kendrapada. Also, schools that have latrines do not have separate facilities for boys and girls. Worse still, the lack of availability of hand-washing facilities adjacent to the latrines compounds the problem.
While many students, particularly girls, often drop out due to lack of latrines, in some schools over 100 pupils share just one latrine. “The shortage of latrines has led to the drop out of pupils, especially among girls, who find them unsafe,” said Dr. Basudev Das, a noted educationist and a retired head master of Gobari high school of the district.
