Bhubaneswar, November 27 (LocalWire): The state government has initiated steps to establish the second open-air jail in Odisha, in accordance with the centre’s National Prison Policy.
The open-air jail concept aims at not confining the prisoners within the four walls of the jail.
The prisoners marked and judged by good behavior are referred to open-air jails where facilities are made available to rectify themselves, a state prison directorate official stated.
Currently, Odisha has one open-air jail at Jamujhari in Khurda district.
The Biju Patnaik Open Air Ashram, which has a capacity of housing 125 inmates, presently has 73 prisoners.
According to sources, the work for setting up the second open-air jail on a 224-acre stretch is now underway at Jujumura in Sambalpur district.
