Baripada, July 30 (LocalWire): Women Self Help Groups in Bangiriposi block area of Mayurbhanj district have set an example in the role of biodiversity conservation.
Members of SHGs have vigorously protected Punasia’s vast forest for years. Bamboo lathis and dry branches of trees are their weapons, through which they guard the forest.
Seeing their enthusiastic dedication for the conservation of the forest, no mafia has dared to sneak into the forest to smuggle trees.
Local forest dwellers are encouraging the SHGs in their activities, especially without enlisting the help of the forest department.
The forest department too, does not interfere in the activities of the SHG.
The forest has trees like sal, and has been protected by local forest dwellers since 1980. The SHGs have been caring for the forest since 1999.
Sabita Naik, who has served as forest guard at Kanchinda beat of Talabandh wildlife, has a major role in encouraging the groups to continue their activities for the protection of the forest.
SHG member Surukini Naik expressed that when someone hacks a tree, she feels the pain as acutely as if someone is cutting her own leg.
“We urge everyone to save forests and feel proud as we do, upon saving a vast forest without the help of the forest department,” said Surukini Naik.
Sailendra Kumar Das, ranger of Bangiriposi has expressed his appreciation as the women groups have protected the vast forest for years.
