Berhampur, August 17 (LocalWire): Senior citizens of Karanjara and Deulapalli
villages under Danapur panchayats of Ganjam district demonstrated in front of the block development office since Friday, demanding pension.
Eighty four-year old Arjuna Nahak of Karanjara village applied for old age pension under the state government’s Madhu Babu Pension Yojana but his name has been missing since the last eight years from the list of beneficiaries.
Like Nahak, several other senior citizens have been deprived of the monthly pension under the social welfare scheme.
‘Since the last eight years I applied for the monthly old age pension but every year, my name has been missing from the list of beneficiaries.
Though I deserve the pension, I fail to realize why my name is missing,’ said Nahak.
Seventy-two year old Dhoba Mandal of Deulapalli also vented his ire. ‘We are fed up applying for the monthly pension.
Due to government’s apathy, several senior citizens died waiting for the old age pension benefits,’ he said.
‘I have instructed the block development officer (BDO) Khallikote to make a priority list of the concerned people and include their names according to seniority basis against death vacancies.
Since old age pension will not be sanctioned for new people at present, they will be prioritized phase wise only if a senior citizen dies and there is a vacancy in the pension lot,’ the district social security officer (DSSO), Subhransu Kumar Moharana, said.
Moharana said in some cases, the age of the people did not tally with their applications and voter identity cards.
In Khallikote block, as many as 4804 senior citizens are receiving old age pension under MBPY at present, he added.
Presently, pension beneficiaries aged 79 and 80 years are getting a monthly amount of Rs 500 and Rs 700 respectively.
