Dhenkanal, Dec 2 (LocalWire) The Sadar Police on Sunday said they have sealed a shelter in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district after female inmates alleged that they were sexually abused there.
According to police, girls staying at Dream Centre Shelter Home at Beltikiri alleged on Friday the centre’s in-charge Simanchal Naik and managing director Fayaz Rehman sexually harassed them.
Based on their complaint, the police sealed the shelter, run by a non-governmental organization (NGO), on Saturday night in the presence of local Tehsildar and District Child Protection Officer (DCPO).
Naik was arrested, followed by Rehman’s detention.
All inmates have been shifted to an undisclosed place to ensure their safety, said the district administration.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed a seven-member fact finding team, led by its Mahila Morcha chief Prabhati Parida, who visited the shelter to talk to the victims as well as locals. However, by the time they reached, the centre was sealed by police.
“Why was the centre sealed off so quickly and the inmates shifted in a hurried manner? Administration is trying to hide the truth. We condemn this move,” said former Dhenkanal MLA Krushna Chandra Patra.
Pertinently, Women and Child Development Minister Prafulla Samal has said the centre was not registered with the government and was running illegally.
