Bhubaneswar, December 22 (LocalWire) The members of the Sikh communities led by two sitting members of Punjab assembly on Sunday hit the streets here in protest against the demolition of parts of Mangu mutt at Puri.
The protesters led by Punjab MLAs Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh took out a rally from Janpath Gurudwara here and demonstrated at the crowded Master canteen square.
Earlier the Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh had taken strong exceptions to the demolition of the mutt, the abode of the Nanak Panthis of Sikh community had summoned various Sikh heads in Odisha to Amritsar.
The Akal Takht built by Shri Guru Hargobind is the highest seat of authority of the Khalsa (the collective body of the Sikhs) and the place of the Jathedar, the highest spokesman of the Sikhs.
Punjab Chief Minister Captian Amarinder Singh had also expressed deep concern over the demolition of parts of Mangu mutt (monastery) on the proximity of 12th century Jagannath temple though the Puri district authority had reiterated that the deities of the mutt will be protected.
The mutt demolition matter has been raised by the Sikh diaspora worldwide with many prominent Sikhs coming down to Puri in recent times.
