Kendrapara, Jan 17 (LocalWire): Forest personnel have arrested six fishermen from Gahiramatha marine sanctuary on charge of trafficking endangered sea turtles, an official said on Friday.
They intercepted the trawler with live turtles at Hukitola Island within the marine sanctuary.
The live marine species were released in the sea,” forest officer Debashis Bhoi told Localwire.
Gahiramatha Beach is the largest rookery of the sea turtles in the world.
The state government has banned all types of fishing within 20 kilometers of the coastline in the marine sanctuary areas covering 1360 square kilometers in the sea from Hukitola to Dhamara for seven months from 1st November to 31st May, the period known as turtle season.
