Berhampur, Feb 16 (LocalWire): Southco, the power distribution company in southern Odisha districts, launched a power disconnection drive against the defaulters on Sunday.
The drive was launched in areas including Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkanagiri, Nabarangapur, Kandhamal and Boudh districts.
“The drive has been launched across our jurisdiction areas.
The details of collections of pending arrears and the number of disconnected consumers will not be known immediately,” said the Chief Operating Officer (COO) P. Arun Kumar.
Prabhat Kumar Kar, the Executive Engineer of Southco, said, “We have started the disconnection drive with 13 teams on board. We are disconnecting power connection of those whose due is more than Rs. 5000 or who haven’t cleared their bills since the last 6 months.”
“Earlier, the Southco had announced to launch a massive disconnection drive to the defaulter consumers from February 16, 2020. The company had given 15 days to the defaulter consumers to clear their dues to avoid an unfavourable situation.
After our announcement, a few of them have paid their dues,” said the COO.
The utility has a huge amount of Rs 1357 Crore pending as arrears on 15.73 lakh consumers.
Out of the pending arrears, Rs 1074 Crore is pending on domestic consumers which constitutes of about 79% of the total defaulting consumers. Over Rs 103 Crore is due among the commercial consumers.
It may be recalled that the Cesco, another power distribution company, has also started disconnecting the power supply in its area.
