Jagatsinghpur, Sept 18 (LocalWire): A school girl and a septuagenarian were killed in two separate incidents in Jagatsinghpur district today.
14-year-old Purnima Behera, a student of Pankpal High School died on the spot when a truck rammed her while she was crossing the Cuttack Paradip state Highway under Kujang police limits, in her cycle.
The truck also hit two other people, who are grievously hurt. Police seized the body and sent it to Kujang hospital for postmortem.
Irate people demonstrated and blocked the road at Pankpal for four hours, throwing traffic in a tizzy, while demanding compensation for the victim’s family.
They also demanded that a bridge be constructed on the canal so that school children can safely reach school.
Kujang police rushed to the spot and pacified the people to call off the stir. The administration handed over Rs 12,000 from Red Cross and promised to construct the bridge.
In another incident in Japa village under Erasama police jurisdiction, a 70-year-old woman was hit by a speeding truck while trying to cross the village road. She died on the spot.
Police seized the truck and arrested the driver. They sent the body to Kujang hospital for postmortem.
