Bhubaneswar, Feb 20(LocalWire) : State Tourism Minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi on Thursday told the Assembly that it is considering to commence water sports and cruise tourism at Bhitarkanika.
The statement comes from the minister after several legislators demanded cruise facilities and other amenities at the tourist site to give an impetus to the tourism potential of the area.
“We have signed an MoU with Kerala Inland Development Authority for starting water sports and cruise facilities at Bhitarkanika.
The board is doing the survey on its feasibility. As soon as they submit a report, we will take a decision accordingly,” he said.

The minister said that Bhitarkanika is a preferred tourist destination of the state and Chief Minister had also asked the Centre to include it among the iconic tourist sites from the state.
Earlier BJD leader Atanu Sabyasachi had asked the minister to consider starting cruise tourism in the area to attract tourists from different parts of the country.
Former finance minister Shashi Bhushan Behera also had asked the state government to start cruise tourism in the area.
“If we start cruise tourism in Bhitarkanika, we can do better tourism than Kerala and substantially increase the income for the state,” Behera told the House.
Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is known as the “ Mini-Amazon” of India. Lying on the coast of Bay of Bengal, it is the second largest Mangrove ecosystem of our country after Sundarbans.
