Bhubaneswar, August 30 (LocalWire): The state government is contemplating to provide higher fiscal incentive and subsidies on procurement of women-friendly agricultural equipment in a bid to draw more women to farming sector.
Women rub shoulders with their male counterparts in agricultural activities. But their role is mostly confined to sowing, plantation and transplantation. The agricultural tools are heavy and not easy for women to use.
So, women fail to involve themselves totally in agrarian operations.
So now the emphasis is being laid to provide higher incentive on buying women-centric equipment, officials of the state agriculture department, said.
The state agriculture draft policy 2019 emphasizes on the use of smaller tools like other states for growth in agriculture sector.
The rising cost of labour is eating into the farmers’ incomes.
With low income, the farmers are unable to access quality inputs.
Mechanisation helps increase quality and precision of agricultural operations and consequently the productivity.
The agrarian operations like land levelling, sowing, planting, applying fertilisers, harvesting and threshing have been improved using farm machines.
The state has a very low level of farm mechanisation compared to other high productivity states.
There is ample room to increase the level of mechanisation to improve productivity and subsequently the income of farmers.
The state government wants to encourage hiring farm equipment by subsidizing the service costs through Direct Benefit Transfer for small and marginal landholders of the state.
Successful agro models from other states will be studied and replicated by employing educated youth and promoting PPP and private entrepreneurship.
Officials said since there are a large number of small-sized land holdings in the state it was not economical for them to own machinery and so the focus would be to develop the right kind of machines for farmers.
