Berhampur, March 6 (LocalWire): Two statues, one of ‘kabi samrat’ Upendra Bhanja and the other of eminent historian Satya Narayan Rajguru, were today unveiled here and in Paralakhmundi respectively.
The 15-feet bronze statue of Bhanja was unveiled by MP Sidhant Mohapatra and MLA Ramesh Chandra Chaupatnaik in the presence of department secretary Manoranjan Panigrahy.
In 2017, BJP’s Ganjam district unit members had demanded the installation of Bhanja’s statue. They had demonstrated before the state’s tourism and culture minister Ashok Chandra Panda, while he unveiled the statue of Gangadhar Mehera, another Odia poet belonging to western Odisha.
They had alleged that the state government was ignoring Bhanja, who had made the entire state proud. Panda had then promised to install a life-size statue of Bhanja in the premises of the Biju Patnaik Sanskruti Bhawan.
‘The minister kept his promise and got the statue worth Rs 11.80 lakh installed by the department of culture under its Baraputra scheme,’ said Mr Chaupatnaik. Several litterateurs also expressed satisfaction for recognising the poet, since there was no statue of the ‘kabi samrat’ other than in the Berhampur University premises.
The cultural department also unveiled the statue of eminent historian Satya Naryan Rajguru at Paralakhemundi because the residents of this district headquarter had been demanding one for a long time.
