Bhubaneswar, September 11 (LocalWire): A male adult bear that had strayed into Balimela notified area council town in Malkangiri town was rescued today by forest department officials much to the relief of local residents.
The animal had strayed into human habitation area from the nearby forested region two days back causing panic among the residents.
While panic locals had alerted the forest authorities, officials informed that they have not received any report about the animal causing harm to any human.
The bear which is conferred protected status under wildlife protection law was trapped yesterday night after the animal made its way to the cage laid for taming it.
The bear had got considerably frightened as locals had tried to chase it.
While the forest officials had initially planned to use the tranquillisation technique to capture the bear, the animal fell into the trap and was caged, an official stated.
“The animal was stressed and strained. It will be released in the wild later today after its health checkup by veterinary surgeons,” the official added.
Straying of bears occurs at intervals in Balimela town as it encompassed by forest area which is home to the species.
