Berhampur, Nov 19 (LocalWire): School students have collected around 2779 kg garbage from two beaches in Ganjam district during their massive week-long drive on cleanliness under Swatch Nirmal Tat Abhiyan.
As many as 3447 students from 58 high schools and more than 500 volunteers participated in the major drive which ended recently. While 1650 kg garbage was collected from Gopalpur beach, 1129 kg garbage was collected from Sonepur beach.
The garbage was handed over to the local urban and rural local bodies for their safe disposal.
The students also conducted rallies and educated local residents, particularly fishermen, to maintain cleanliness of the beaches, said district education officer (DEO) Ganjam, Sanatan Panda.
The students also staged cultural programmes based on Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan and Swatchh Vidyalaya. As many as 17 different groups of students staged Swatchh Bharat concept, he added.
The drive was inaugurated by Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange on 11 November. Several officials of the Central and state governments and MLA (Gopalpur) Pradeep Panigrahy attended the programme.
Besides Goplapur-on-Sea and Sonepur, three more beaches, Udaypur in Balasore district, Jahania and Puri beaches were included in the programme.
