Jagatsinghpur, August 24 (LocalWire): Students of Shree Jagannath Mahavidyalaya in Naugaon today staged a sit-in protest in front of the college against the state government’s decision not to conduct the students’ union election in degree colleges and the state universities.
Hundreds of students led by student union leader Smrutiranjan Jena, Badal Nayak and others demonstrated and sat on mass dharna in front of the college by closing the main gate.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Shree Jagannath Mahavidyalaya principal protesting the illegal decision of the state government.
College union leaders allege that the state government was apprehensive of the sure defeat of ruling party college union in the majority of the colleges and hence the Department of Higher Education has decided not to conduct the poll in all universities and degree colleges of the state.
Meanwhile, students of the college said that that Department of Higher Education should return the fees collected for college union from all degree and universities failing which the students would be forced to intensify their stir against it.
It may be recalled that on Thursday last, the Higher Education Department had decided not to conduct college union poll in degree colleges and state universities across Odisha saying that the decision was being taken in the larger interest of the students’ community.
