Angul, October 19 (LocalWire): An open-cast coal mine of the state-run Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has been made encroachment free with the district police administration evicting the squatters from occupied mining territory.

The MCL’s plan to expand the underground mining at the Jagannath open cast mine failed to make any headway since the mining area was taken over for illegal human settlement for over a year.

“The illegal occupation had resulted in the loss of coal production and off-take to the tune of two million tonnes during the current financial year,” MCL head of public relations Dikken Mehra said.

According to reports, over 15 families who were illegally occupying the mining are near Rakas village were evicted and shifted to temporary accommodation at the Central Colony.

“The eviction was successfully carried out despite a show of protest.

However, as the encroachers did not leave the place voluntarily they had to be relocated,” a senior police official stated.

“In accordance with the rehabilitation and resettlement policy of the government, the oustees were awarded Rs 1.2 lakh ex-gratia housing assistance. Besides each of the family was provided with Rs one lakh for shifting,” an MCL official said.

“As a section of encroachers refused to leave the land, the police had to detain the protesters.

Some politically affiliated people also staged a protest and as a result production at all coal mines in Talcher coalfields came to an abrupt halt last evening.

It caused a loss of 50,000 tons of coal production,” the company official said.

“The production in Jagannath open cast and the Balram open cast mines continues to be affected as the protest continued.

Normal operation has resumed in a dozen of other coal mines,” the official added.
