Berhampur, March 30 (LocalWire): Berhampur’s famed biannual Thakurani Yatra, also known as the festival of Devangiris (weaving community), began on Saturday with pomp and gaiety.
As per tradition, the festival kicked-off after the head priest declared that the goddess has arrived at her father’s house on Desbehera Street here.
P. Durga Prasad Desibehera, “goddess’s father” who holds the “inherited right” to conduct the event, took out a customary procession to the Thakurani temple on Friday midnight to invite her to her father’s home.
After offering prayers, they returned to Desbehera’s house with a garland of Itala flowers to be kept on a “mandap”, a makeshift house built for the goddess in the compound, during the festival period.
Thousands of people have visited the “mandap” to seek her blessings after the procession.
As per custom, the garland is kept inside a decorated earthen pot, known as Ghata, which is among nine pots to be symbolically used for carrying Desbehera’s imaginary wives during a final procession.
During the festival, the city is decked with flowers and colorful lights for the visitors who come from different parts of the state.
