DDRC conducts 33 clubfoot corrective surgeries

December 7, 2019 By Hrusikesh Mohanty Leave a Comment

Share

Berhampur, December 7 (LocalWire): The District Disability Rehabilitation Center (DDRC) in Kandhamal has conducted deformity correction surgery of 33 clubfoot children, including 15 girls across four districts.

The centre has been declared as a Model Nodal Center for Deformity Correction (MNCDC) by the state government.

The surgeons from Swami Vivekananda National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTR), Olatapur, headed by Dr. KC Mohapatra have conducted surgeries on 36 children aged between six months to 13 years, with the help of local doctors during the last two days.

A special ward was earmarked for these patients at the district headquarter hospital in Phulbani and the patients will stay there for 21 days till their plaster is removed, said district disability rehabilitation officer AK Panda said, adding that the second plaster will be done for one-and half months.

“Removal of plaster and physiotherapy would be done for three weeks after the removal of plaster,” he stated.

Overall, 14 children from Kandhamal, four from Boudh, six from Sonepur, nine and Balangir have conducted the surgeries, he said.

“These poor students can’t go to Olatpur for their surgery. So we provided free-surgery in the district and invited the doctor team from SVNIRTR. At least Rs 30,000 was spent for each child for the treatment,” he said.

“I was very much worried when my son was born with clubfoot in his left foot. Now I can take a sigh of relief after operation of his feet.

The doctors have assured me that he will be cured after four months,” Subash Kanhar, whose son Abhaya was one of the beneficiaries, stated.

A similar opinion was shared by Banchha Bank, father of nine-month old Bharati of Biramaharaj Pur in Sonepur, whose surgery was also conducted at the camp.

“I hope she will be relived soon and get a new lease of life,” Banchha said.

“A separate 20-bed ward was set up in the district headquarter hospital Phulbani to conduct surgery and treatment of the patients and physiotherapy. Around four months’ time is needed for corrective of one’s deformity,” Panda said.

During the last ten years, the DDRC Kandhamal has conducted over 791 corrective surgeries giving new lease of life to 582 persons.

The first surgery camp was held in 2008-09, said Panda, while 60 per cent of the beneficiaries are from Kandhamal district, others are from Boudh, Sonepur, Rayagada, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj districts, he said.

Odisha home to 15 percent of country’s malaria endemic districts

December 6, 2019 By Manoj Kar Leave a Comment

Bhubaneswar,December 6 (LocalWire):Odisha is home to 15 percent of country’s malaria endemic districts even though the incidence of the vector-borne disease in the State has comparatively climbed down in the recent years.

Of the country’s 63 districts identified as the malaria’s hotbed, ten districts of Odisha figure in the inglorious list as per the latest statistics reeled out by the union health and family welfare ministry.

Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Koraput, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Nuapada have been identified as malaria endemic districts as per the ministry report.

However the silver lining of malaria survey report suggests that incidence of malaria and fatality cases is steadily on the downslide in the State.

66,311 malaria cases were reported in 2018 year, a substantial climb-down from 2017 when 3,47,860 cases were recorded.

In 2016 year, 4,44,843 malaria cases were diagnosed by government health agencies.

The malaria fatalities have also made a nosedive in past three years.

While 77 people died of malaria in 2016, the fatalities had come down to 24 in 2017. The 2018 year saw 24 people dying of malaria.

While as many as 21 out of 30 districts were identified as malaria endemic in 2016, the number of endemic districts dropped down to 10 in 2018, the statistical report pointed out.

The incidence of disease and rate of fatality has been controlled considerably due to prompt intervention by the health department.

The hilly forest and tribal dominated districts in the southern, northern and western parts of the State are regarded as endemic areas while the coastal districts are less affected by the disease.

The distribution of long lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) has succeeded to control the outbreak of the disease. 36 lakh LLINs have already been distributed this year.

The State will procure 1.13 crore nets for free distribution mostly malaria prone areas, said the officials.

The government has successfully launched “Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakaran” (DAMaN) scheme to provide access to services in the most remote and difficult-to-reach areas of the state and screen the entire population of the inaccessible areas and treat all positive cases with appropriates Anti-malaria drugs, they added.

Odisha making good progress on women health issues: UNFPA

November 29, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, November 29 (LocalWire): Odisha has made visible progress in eliminating preventable maternal deaths, gender-based violence, child marriage and use of contraceptives.

According to the data presented at a consultation on sexual reproductive health and rights organised by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, the number of pregnant women in the state going for three or more Ante Natal Checkup (ANC) doubled between 1991-92 and 2015-16.

“While Institutional Deliveries increased five-fold in the state, Maternal Mortality Ratio reduced by more than half,” UNFPA state programme coordinator Dr Deepa Prasad said.

“Many women today have better lives than their mothers and can hope for even more for their daughters.
But unfortunately, these gains have not been experienced equally by all,” Prasad said while addressing an audience of adolescents, LGBT, persons with disability and representatives from civil society organizations.

Similarly, it was noted that the number of girls marrying before the age of 18 years and cases of adolescent pregnancy has reduced by half during the same period.

The consultation was organised to discuss 25 years of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25).

ICPD stands for the International Conference on Population and Development, a 1994 meeting in Cairo where 179 governments adopted a revolutionary Programme of Action and called for women’s reproductive health and rights to take centre stage in national and global development efforts.

Spending time on mobile had assumed addiction proportion.

I learnt tips, ways and means to curb my child’s addictive habit,’ said a homemaker who took part in the one day training-cum-workshop.

‘I was advised to motivate him towards extracurricular activities, sports, games, physical exercise and yoga or towards creative work.

I was also advised that the child should not be forced upon to give up using the smartphone.

The frequency and duration of use should be systematically trimmed down or else the child may develop irritation and reactionary mindset,’ she said.

Kendrapara, Nov 26 (LocalWire): England-based NRI Dr Sahadev Swain visits the nondescript village Saliancha under Aul block in Kendrapara district every year with the only mission to provide free health service to the villagers.

He organizes health camps and provides free and quality medical facilities to the villagers.

‘When I treat patients sitting in my village, I get satisfaction by being able to help the poor,’ Dr Swain said.

‘I decided to transform the lives of these villagers by providing them free and quality medical facilities.

I owe a lot to my my family and my village. Everyone should give back something to their family, village, state and country and I have started in a very small way in my village, he said.

If India has any hope of playing a dominant role in the time to come, it needs to drastically improve its education and health facilities.

Otherwise, ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ will prove hollow and self-defeating,’ added Dr Swain.

Dr Sahadev Swain who was born in the riverside village Saliancha in 1960 studied in the village primary school and passed HSC examination from the High School at Aul.

Later, he passed MBBS from Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur.

Her extra toes and fingers made people believe that she was a witch

November 25, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Ganjam, November 25 (LocalWire): It may be a well-defined medical condition globally, but Polydactyly or having extra toes and fingers may make people believe that you are a witch.

This has been the case of a 65-year-old woman, Nayak Kumari from Ganjam district in the state, who was born with 20 toes and 12 fingers.

According to Kumari, her poor parents did not have the means to get her diagnosed and treated and she had to bear the stigma of being called a witch by the villagers.

The local villagers who failed to understand that it was simply a case of defect or deformation at birth still believe that she is a witch and keep a distance from her.

The hostile behavior of the villagers has forced Kumari to remain within the confines of her small house, as much as possible.

Experts point out that Polydactyly is a condition where someone is born with one or more extra fingers or toes and the additional growth can happen in one or both hands or feet, and it can be treated with surgical intervention.

Medical journals also indicate that Polydactyly is a relatively common developmental abnormality with little clinical significance, although cosmetically it is generally regarded as unacceptable.

According to the US-based National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, “It is the most common birth defect of the hand and foot.

Polydactyly can occur as an isolated finding such that the person has no other physical anomalies or intellectual impairment.”

The Center further adds that: “It can occur in association with other birth defects and cognitive abnormalities as part of a genetic syndrome.

In some cases, the extra digits may be well-formed and functional. Surgery may be considered especially for poorly formed digits or very large extra digits. Surgical management depends greatly on the complexity of the deformity.”

It is interesting to note that the Bollywood star actor Hrithik Roshan also has Polydactyly condition, conjoined thumb in his right hand, something that many consider lucky for him.

Berhampur, November 25 (LocalWire): Five years ago, the parents of Priyanka came to know their 10-year old daughter had a hole in her heart.

All their hopes dashed to the ground when even after waiting for two years, the hole in her heart did not heal automatically, as the doctors had assumed.

The congenital heart disease (CHD) was making Priyanka weaker; she was unable to walk more than a few meters, and her fingers and feet had started to turn blue more often.

After running from pillar to post, health staff, who screened the children in her school, guided her father to avail of the Rashtriya Bal Swathya Karyakram (RBSK) scheme that provides for free diagnosis and treatment of children affected with congenital heart diseases.

After completing the required modalities to avail free treatment under the scheme, she was operated at a private hospital, Ahmadabad, one of the empanelled hospitals under the scheme on 23 August.

“Now she is leading a normal life without any problem,” her mother K Parvati said

Similarly, parents of nine-year-old Supranjit of Kolathigaon in Rangeilunda block were also a worried lot when the doctors in a private hospital told them that the chances of his survival were bleak unless he was operated upon.

“They demanded at least Rs three lakh for operation. I was worried about how to arrange money for the surgery of my son,” his father, a daily labourer, Sanatan Dalia said.

Later, he was approached by the team of RBSK who advised him about the free operation facility.

“After fulfilling all requirements, they took us Ahmadabad by flight and admitted my son in a hospital, where his surgery was conducted. I thank the government for giving a new lease of life to my son,” he stated.

Like Priyanka and Supranjit, as many as 23 such children of Ganjam district have been treated during the last three months under the scheme.

“We are very happy over the hospitality rendered by the staff in Ganjam as well as the hospital at Ahmadabad,” a small trader Rajesh Kumar Sahu said.

A local of Jagannath Prasad, Sahu’s 11-year old son Aditya also received the treatment under the scheme.

During their stay at Satya Sai Heart Hospital in August last, chief minister Naveen Patnaik had visited the hospital and had interacted with the children, recalled Sulochana Jani of Khajuripalli, near Jagannath Prasad whose daughter Nandarani (8) has been cured after the operation.

According to the chief district medical officer Bijay Kumar Panigrahy, since the RBSK scheme was implemented in the district in 2016, as many as 233 congenital heart disease cases have been detected and 136 of them have been successfully treated free of cost.

The district has two dedicated mobile health teams that conduct screening at government schools and Anganwadi centers and identify children suffering from CHD to ensure that they get free treatment, he said

Jaga, Balia operation lands Prof Ashok Mahapatra into Limca book of records

November 13, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, November 13 (LocalWire): The rare craniopagus surgery conducted successfully by a team led by eminent neurosurgeon Prof. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra at AIIMS in New Delhi in 2017 has featured in the 2020 edition of the Limca Book of Records.

The team comprising 125 doctors and paramedical staff had operated on 28-month-old Jaga and Balia, who were joined to each other at the cranium.

The complex surgery was conducted in two stages: first on 28 August 2017 and then on 25 October 2017, and has been recorded as the first craniopagus surgery in India in the record book.

Prof. Mahapatra, who was the head of the neurosurgery department at AIIMS then said, “Though a difficult challenge, it was the first successful craniopagus surgery in India.”

“The facilities and expertise available at AIIMS in New Delhi made it possible,” he said, adding that his colleague Prof. Deepak Kumar Gupta and a large number of doctors and paramedics toiled hard to separate the twins.

One of the features of the surgery was that a vein taken from the vein bank at AIIMS was grafted in Balia’s brain as the children shared only one vein and it was the first such case of vein grafting in the world, he said.

After Jaga and Balia were admitted to AIIMs, a preliminary assessment was made to ascertain whether they could stand the arduous surgical processes.

“We decided to go ahead after the twins were made to undergo all tests under anesthesia conducted on 26 July 2017 over a 12-hour period,” the doctor said.

Prof. Mahapatra said the team constituted to take up the surgical separation took advice from Prof. James T. Goodrich, a famous pediatric neurosurgeon at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York, as he had done two such surgeries earlier and was considered the best in the world.

“We spent time gathering as much information about fused brains and conducted three dry runs before the actual surgery was performed,” he said, adding that the team was aware that the probability of success, in this case, was only around 25 percent.

Chances of such cases are one in three million, and barely 12 or 13 such surgeries have been done in the world during the last 33 years, Prof. Mahapatra stated.

Jaga and Balia, who spent over two years in AIIMS, New Delhi before returning to Odisha are doing well though Balia’s development was slow. “We should give them two to three years’ time to see how they improve,” he said.

Babies born in the midst of cyclone named Bulbul

November 11, 2019 By Ashis Senapati Leave a Comment

Kendrapara, Nov 11 (LocalWire): What’s in a name questioned the Bard but names are very important for the cyclone-affected villagers of the coastal district of Kendrapara.

They are naming their newborns after Cyclone Bulbul (meaning songbird) that hit them on 9 November to remember the nature’s fury and the struggle they went through to bring the baby to the world.

In remote villages, unlike in urban areas, birthdays are not a big draw. Villagers at times do not remember the birthdays of their children. But, the mothers who gave birth to babies on 9 November will remember it till their last breath as it’s a feeling of stoic acceptance and courage named the newborns Bulbul.

Dr Urmila Mishra, the CDMO, Kendrapada, said, ‘145 pregnant women were shifted to different hospitals in the district three to four days before Cyclone Bulbul. 20 women delivered babies on Friday night and Saturday and quickly named their child Bulbul. All the newborns and mothers are doing fine.’

Aliva Rout, wife of Amar Rout of village Basant under Rajnagar block gave birth to a daughter on Saturday. ‘We named our daughter after Bulbul,’ said Amar.

Damayanti Das, wife of Sarbeswar Das of village Gokhani under Rajnagar block had her labour pain the day the cyclone struck the coastal district. Their thatched house was damaged by the strong winds. The villagers managed to admit her in the Community Health Center at Rajnagar where she gave birth to a son and the new born was appropriately named Bulbul.

‘Though Bulbul is a common name for girls, I decided to name my son Bulbul as he was born during the cyclone,’ said Damayanti.

Ranjan Mandal’s wife Gita Mandal of Jamboo village gave birth to a daughter on Saturday in the Community Health Center of Mahakalapada and was also named Bulbul.

This young doctor is winning hearts in Balasore (Special)

November 11, 2019 By Sibdas Kundu 1 Comment

Share

Balasore, November 11 (LocalWire): Locals in the tribal-dominated areas, here, frequently talk of a young doctor and wait for him. He has also drawn attention and earned accolades in the nearby areas, for the service beyond duty hours.

Meet Dr. Suraj Jena, the 29-year old MBBS who is currently serving at Raj Berhampur CHC since January 2019, his first posting after passing out from Burla.

The only son of a retired bank manager Brajakishore and Suprava of Santragadia from Oupada block, Dr. Jena is often seen going around the villages after his duty hours, and on holidays conducting free medical checkups.

He also distributes free medicines and advises patients that they can get them from the nearest government hospitals and healthcare centres.

According to locals, he regularly visits the villages on his motorbike with a bag containing medicines, stethoscope and BP measuring machine, along with his father with prior information to the village heads.

Dr. Jena says that he was motivated by his parents to serve people.

“Whenever I go for a camp my father accompanies me. In fact, I was encouraged by my parents,” he said, adding that the local population is mostly tribal and they are majorly dependent on farming for living or are daily wage earners.

“They least care for the health and most of the time don’t even know that they are inflicted with diseases. Most of them lack knowledge of basic health requirements and do not visit doctors due to paucity of money,” Dr. Jena stated.

“They even neglect common ailments that aggravate to become serious ailments. I came across a TB patient who was not aware that he had the diseases. Similarly, women neglect their health even though they suffer,” he said.

Dr. Jena also has a plan for holding a major health camp sometime in February next year along with batch mates. “Since all are busy with the duties and preparing for PG entrance, we plan to hold it after our exams,” he said.

Oupada and Nilgiri often hog the headlines for wrong reasons, with cases of malaria and diarrhea being reported quite often from here, but Dr. Jena has, with his selfless approach and service has brought a piece of good news that the locals are now proudly talking about.

November 10, 2019 By Hrusikesh Mohanty Leave a Comment

Share

Berhampur, Nov 10 (LocalWire): Ganjam district Collector, Vijay Amruta Kulange stressed on the increase in the number of beds in the medicine and gynaecology departments of MKCG Medical College and Hospital, here, after interacting with patients during a surprise visit to the hospital today.

Terming it as a routine visit, he said he found several patients lying on the floor due to beds being occupied to the maximum.

‘I have asked the authorities to increase the number of beds,’ he said.

There are 240 beds in the medicine wards and 150 beds in the gynecology ward at present.

Since the flow of patients to these two departments is more, they failed to secure beds.

The Collector also interacted with patients about their problems, the quality of food and whether they got their supply of medicines.

Kulange said he inspected the infrastructure including drinking water, cleanliness and supply of medicines.

He asked the authorities to undertake a mass cleanliness drive in the campus and also directed the engineers of works department to cover the drains.

Entry of outsiders should also be restricted inside the hospital, he added.

At the same time, Kulange also asked the doctors to wear aprons and identity cards and use biometric machines when they were inside the Medical College and Hospital.

Odisha stood second in MMR

November 9, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, Nov 9 (LocalWire) The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in Odisha has registered a 6.6% decline though still below the national average.

The state recorded 12 point decline in MMR, the second highest in the country after Rajasthan (13 point) between 2014-2016 and 2015-2017, according to Sample Registration System (SRS) report released recently by the centre.

Though the number of maternal deaths per one lakh live births continue to be high in comparison to other States, the MMR has dropped by 12 point in the state, it said.

While Odisha’s MMR stood at 180 in 2014-16, it has come down to 168, a drop by 12 points in 2015-17.

On the basis of the countrywide compilation of statistics, the MMR has come down from 130 per one lakh live births in 2014-2016 to 122 in 2015-2017 to 122 in 2015-2017, the SRS report said.

The proactive health policy implemented by the state government in promoting institutional delivery and timely shifting of pregnant women to hospitals has led to the reduction of MMR.

Besides, free ambulance services under 102 Janani Express and incentives under Janani Surakhya Yojana, Janani Sishu Surakhya Karyakrama and Mamata also helped to achieve the decline, health officials said.

Berhampur, Oct 30 (LocalWire) Doctors in government-run hospitals in Ganjam district will no longer use pen and paper to write prescriptions and case history of the patients. They will do so digitally in a Tab as the district administration will soon introduce paperless prescription and Mo Hospital system.

The proposed system, first the first time in the state, is likely to be rolled out by the end of the next month, official sources said here.

“From registration to getting free medicine from Niramaya counter, all will be done through digitally under the proposed initiative of electronic prescription under Mo Hospital system”, said Ganjam collector Vijay Amruta Kulange.

The patients will not stand in queue in front of the doctor’s chamber or run from one counter to other to get free medicines under Niramaya, a government scheme.

“We are planning to introduce this system in one of the urban primary health centres in Berhampur before rolling out in other hospitals” said collector.

Chief district medical officer (CDMO), Ganjam, Bijay Kumar Panigrahy said the process has already started and it will take about a month to introduce the system on pilot basis, he said.

According to the proposed system, a patient will get a number after registration of name and address in the counter of the hospital.

The number will automatically display the department and doctor’s chamber. A digital board installed near the doctor’s camber will show the waiting number of the patients and they will have to sit in the waiting room till their number comes, sources said.

After treatment of the patient, the doctor will write the prescription in the Tab in digital pen without using any pen and paper and only tick the medicines for the patients from a list of drugs (Niramaya medicines) available in the Tab.

The patients will get the medicine from Niramaya counter by disclosing his registration or unique number, the sources said.

The Tabs will be provided to the doctors from the funds of Swasta Biksh Samiti in the hospital, collector said.

Patients will not face any problem or run from one counter to other with paper prescription to get medicine.

It will also help the doctors to store the patients’ history of disease in the Tab, said the collector adding the allegation against doctors about the prescribing medicines not available in Niramaya scheme will also be solved.

Moreover, all the medicines available in Niramaya store would bear barcode. ‘It will reflect the quantity of distribution of medicine and real time demand ”, he said. After seeing the success of the proposed system, Kulange said they would go to integrate the system with Nidan, the free pathological test scheme of the government.

Govt ropes in three private hospitals for golden hour free treatment

October 28, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Bhubaneswar, 28 (LocalWire) As part of the ‘golden hour’ free treatment initiative for road accident victims, Odisha government has roped in the services of leading private healthcare institutes to reduce the rate of fatalities.

The health and family welfare department in a notification issued on Monday announced that free treatment for the trauma patients will be provided in Bhubaneswar-based Apollo Hospital and AMRI Hospital and Ashwini Hospital in Cuttack.

The government will bear the cost of treatment from the Free Treatment for Trauma Fund (FTTF).

The State health department has constituted a three-member cell to guide the patients and their relatives, the notification said.

The golden hour is referred to as first hour after the road accident trauma.

If healthcare facility is extended at this crucial and critical juncture, there is greater chance of survival of the road accident victims and reducing the severity of the injury.

It may be recalled here that the State government had earlier announced to reduce the fatalities by extending free emergency medical care facilities at the state-of-the-art private hospitals.

The treatment of road accident victims at private hospitals will be free with the government providing Rs. four crore financial provisions to Odisha Road Safety Fund of the Health & Family Welfare Department.

It may be noted here that the Committee on Road Safety constituted by the Supreme Court had earlier directed the State government to reduce the road accident fatalities by 10% every year.

However, fatalities instead are on the rise. During 2017, the rate of increase was 7.33% while it climbed up to 11% in 2018. This year till August end, the fatality ratio has jumped up to nearly 12%. The increasing trend was adversely viewed by the apex court appointed committee.

Besides drunken driving, over-speeding, use of mobile phone while driving, unregulated vehicular traffic, violation of road safety norms and unauthorised roadside parking have all contributed to the rise in the number of road-accident deaths.
