Berhampur, Sept 13 (LocalWire): Three persons were arrested here on Friday for allegedly trying to smuggle nearly 80 kgs of sandalwood out of the state.
The car being used for smuggling the fragrant wood was carrying five bags of sandalwood, weighing 79.24 kilograms, the worth of which is over Rs 1.2 lakhs in the international market, police officials said on Sunday.
The accused persons were identified as Pratap Nayak, 30, of Bhatupanka, Mohammad Jamshed, 48, of Khaza Sahi in Berhampur and Sravan Kumar Sharma, 42, of Jewanga in Kannauj of Uttar Pradesh, police said. Nayak was driving the vehicle.
The police handed over the seized sandalwood and vehicle to the forest officials of Chandragiri forest range for further investigation.
IIC of Mohana police station Sujit Nayak stated, “We had intensified vehicle checking on Luhagudi-Malasapadara road acting on a tip-off.
The sandalwood had been procured from Chheligada area near G. Udayagiri and was being taken to Berhampur, from where it would have been transported to other states.”
Sandalwood is in huge demand, as it is used to make furniture, ornaments, sacred objects, medicines, perfumes, etc. The sale of sandalwood without license is restricted by the government.
