Bhubaneswar, October 25 (LocalWire): At least three persons were killed and five others injured in separate rain-related incidents in the state as the torrential rains, due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the West Central Bay of Bengal, continued over most parts of northern and southern Odisha for the third consecutive day.
According to sources, three persons were killed as mud-walled houses collapsed in Kendrapara, Balasore, and Puri, while five persons were injured in similar cases of house collapse.
Sources in the office of the Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) here informed that over 50 houses have also been damaged in landslides caused by heavy rains.
However, the overall damage assessment report is yet to reach the authorities here from the affected areas, SRC officials stated.
Meanwhile, schools and Anganwadi centres have been shut down for the day in view of the prevailing weather situation.
Overnight rains resulted in a landslide at Mukhalinga mountain that has led to severe damage of 20 houses, while over 22 houses in the Kulanga village of Badakalakot panchayat under Gumma block in Gajapati district were reported partially damaged. The incident took place around 7.00 am on Thursday.
Besides causing extensive damage to the properties, over 150 cattle and goats are reported to have died after getting buried under the debris of the collapsing houses.
