Berhampur, Oct 23 (LocalWire): Continuing its crackdown on illegal labour trafficking, police arrested three middlemen from Khallikote, one of the major labour trafficking areas in Ganjam district, on Tuesday.
The accused Prafulla Sahu of Langaleswar, Balaram Barik and Akula Pradhan of PNuagaon have trafficked several people from different areas under Khallikote police stations limits to other states and abroad after luring them with decent jobs and handsome salary and other facilities like free accommodation and food.
But in reality, most labourers faced miserable conditions in their workplaces. As the labour-trafficking season is approaching (generally after Diwali and harvesting of paddy), police decided to snoop down on the labour traffickers and rescue the labourers.
‘These three have been sending labourers from villages in Khallikote area for last three decades,’ said inspector in charge, Khallikote police station, Satya Narayan Pradhan.
He said the trio had sent labourers to different construction firms in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The accused do not have any valid labour contractor license, police said.
While at least three immigrant labourers from Khallikote area died in their work places in Arab countries in the last three months, around 25 who were stranded, returned to their native villages after the government intervened.
