Bhubaneswar, May 24 (LocalWire): Several political heavyweights from across the political spectrum have bite dust in the 2019 elections in Odisha.
Maheswar Mohanty, a former minister and five-time BJD legislator from Puri, lost to BJP’s Jayanta Kumar Sarangi.
Sarangi, a close associate of Mohanty, had quit BJD after being denied a ticket.
Sanjay Das Burma, a former minister and two times BJD MLA from Brahmagiri, lost to Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra of BJP.
He’s the younger brother of ex-Congress man Lalatendu Mohapatra.
Lal Bihari Himirika, former minister and three-time MLA from Rayagada, lost to an independent candidate.
Three-time MLA Debashish Samantaray of BJD lost to Mohammed Moquim of Congress from Cuttack-Barbati.
Seven-time MLA Damodar Rout, a popular figure in Odisha politics, couldn’t even put up a fight and finished third after BJD and Congress in Balikuda-Ersama seat. Rout, one of the senior most members of BJD, had joined BJP this year.
Other key candidates who faced defeat included five-time MLA of BJP from Patnagarh K.V Singh Deo, Odisha Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik from Ghasipura and Bhandaripokhari seats, Chirnjib Biswal of Congress from Jagatsinghpur, Raghunath Mohanty from Basta, Jiban Pradip Dash from Balasore.
