Jagatsinghpur, September 25 (LocalWire): Four persons were injured due to clash between traders and police in Raghunathpur today.
The traders were protesting the eviction of shops along the embankment of branch canal of Taladanada main canal and lay down on the road in front of JCB machine blocking the road.
According to sources, local businessmen have set up permanent shops and numbers of bridges on the branch canal number 8 encroaching upon government land.
The encroachers have set up buildings, cabins, and hutments from Biju Pattnaik Chowk of Raghunathpur Bazar to Kotkana village of Jaganathpur panchayat.
Further, the encroachers have been dumping waste in the canal choking it and blocking the smooth flow of irrigation water to the villages, severely impacting agricultural productivity in the area.
Local farmers had sought the intervention of the collector, tahsildar, and officials of the Irrigation Department requesting them to evict the illegal occupants, but with no result.
Later, farmers Anam Charan Biswal, Bipin Bihari Swain, Taranisen Mohapatra and Rama Ranjan Swain of Kotakana village filed a writ petition in the Orissa High Court pleading eviction of illegal encroachers and release of irrigation water to their paddy field for agriculture purposes.
Responding to the petition, the court had directed the administration to dismantle the illegal constructions from the canal embankment site.
