Berhampur, Oct 21 (LocalWire): Continuing the clampdown on illegal labour trafficking from tribal-dominated districts, police today arrested a trafficker at Baliguda in Kandhamal district and rescued 19 labourers, including three minor girls.
The accused identified as Ashutosh Geja, 35, of Tarava area of Sonepur district was trying to escape from the bus-stand in Baliguda but was caught, said inspector in-charge, Baliguda police station, Prasant Kumar Behera.
The middleman along with the labourers was waiting for a bus when the police raided the bus stand after a tip off regarding trafficking of labourers from Rayagarh and Kandhamal, he said.
The rescued labourers, including seven males and 12 females and three minors belong to remote areas of Rayagada district, police said.
The middlemen, who have no license to traffic labourers, are suspected of taking them out of the state promising them proper wages and other facilities, engage them with construction companies, police said. The rescued labourers, however, did not know where the man was taking them for work, police added.
While all the adult labourers have been handed over to the district labour office for further inquiry, three minor girls were produced before the district child welfare committee, he said.
