Berhampur, Sept 2 (LocalWire): The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has engaged transgenders in the collection of parking fees from different public stands in the city from Tuesday.
At least ten members of two self-help groups (SHG) of transgenders have been engaged in the task.
They have been entrusted with at least four public stands including Old Berhampur, Arnnapurna Market, Sai Market Complex and near Girija Square, for collection of the parking fees on pilot basis, said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
“We will decide to entrust more areas to them only after seeing their success,” he added.
Parking fee is one of the major chunks of revenue of the BeMC.
Each group has been provided the M-POS machine for the purpose.
Before they started the collection of the fees, they had gone for the training on handling the M-POS machines for four days.
The transgenders engaged in the collection are abiding the COVID-19 regulations by wearing masks and maintaining social distancing norms in the field.
The main purpose of the engagement of transgenders to collect the parking fees was to bring them into the mainstream and also make them self-reliant, said the commissioner.
“This will let us lead a dignified life.
Besides, it will also help us to earn, when our traditional livelihood is severely affected due to the lockdown implemented by the government to contain the spread of the Covid-19,” said Sweety Sahu, president of Sakhi, an organization of the transgenders.
The population of transgenders in the Silk City is around 200.
Most of these community members are presently engaged in the traditional practices of dancing at family functions, fairs and festivals and running beauty parlors.
