Kendrapara, Nov 14 (Localwire): Even with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s ‘Mahaprayan’ scheme in place, a poor tribal woman was reportedly compelled to beg for money at a government hospital at Pattamundai in Kendrapara district to transport the body of her husband to her native Saharapada village.
Daily wager Jangarai Munda, 55, died at the hospital on Monday. Having spent all her funds on her husband’s treatment, Minati Munda had no money to take Janjarai’s body to their home, around 130 kilometers from Pattamundai.
Minati said even hospital authorities refused to provide her the ‘Mahaprayan’ vehicle, whereas private vehicles charged her Rs. 5000.
To collect funds, she started begging at the hospital itself, but managed to arrange only Rs. 2000.
With no option left, Minati took her husband’s body to the nearest cremation ground, instead of their native village, and perform the last rites.
“I was quite upset after the hospital authorities did not provide me the ambulance to carry the body to our village for his last rites,” said Minati.
“ Under the Mahaprayan scheme, we cannot transport body outside the district. We are always ready to provide all types of help to the poor to provide a decent funeral within the same district, District Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Baishnab Charana Sahoo told LocalWire.
