Berhampur, Jan 19 (LocalWire) Local wildlife team on Sunday arrested two persons for killing birds in the world famous Chilika lake, an official said.
The accused persons are identified as Sudarshan Behera and Laxmidhar Behera of Sorana.
They were caught red-handed when they were transporting two large whistling teals after killing in the lake, sub-divisional forest officer, Chilka wildlife division Alok Ranjan Hota told LocalWire.
During the last three months, wildlife officials have registered at least nine poaching cases, arrested 14 poachers including two fishermen and seized over 100 birds. Most of the cases were from Tangi area.
The Chilika lagoon spread across Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts is one of country’s biggest waterfowl habitats, where the migratory birds come in thousands to nest during winter.
The birds fly from Northern Eurasia, Caspian region, Siberia, Kazakh, Lake Baikal and the remote areas of Russia and neighbouring countries and start their homeward journey before the onset of summer.
