Berhampur, Sept 17 (LocalWire): Two persons were arrested by forest department officials on charge of poaching of a blackbuck, an endangered animal at Badua under Jagananth Prasad forest range in Ganjam district on Monday.
Three other accused are on run and efforts are on to arrest them, said divisional forest officer, Ghumusar North, AK Dalai.
Some villages have laid livewires by hooking from the KV line for hunting wild animals.
The blackbuck which was passing through the field was entangled in the livewire and killed, said range officer Jagannath Prasad, Umakant Das. Forest staff detected the incident during patrolling, he added.
‘The villagers strongly protested the forest officers when they went to arrest Pandav Pradhan and Sudarshan Pradhan. Later, we raided the village with more staff and arrested them,’ Das said. Besides the carcass of the blackbuck, forest officials also seized around
Three-metre aluminum wire, 5 kg GI wire, 52 glass bottles and 54 bamboos from the spot, he Added.
On 1 September, forest officials had also arrested Prakash Nayak with blackbuck meat at Tulasipalli while he was on his way to sell the meat.
