Malkangiri, Nov 2 (LocalWire) The abhorrent superstition-bound witchcraft practice has claimed two more lives with a man and his son being hacked to death in Malkangiri district on Friday night, police said today.
Bodies of Sadan Mali (45) and his son Niladrri Mali (24) were retrieved today in a pool of blood near a pond in Maliguda village, predominantly inhabited by tribal people, under Mathili police station of the district.
The double murder was related to witchcraft practice. The two accused assailants duo have surrendered before the police and confessed to their crime, said Malkangiri Superintendent of Police, Rishikesh Dnyandeo Khilari.
They had eliminated the father-son duo after suspecting the victims to be practicing witchcraft which made their children fall sick, he said.
With the latest double murder, 41 witch-hunting human toll has been recorded (from January 1 to November 1) this year while the figures were 39 in 2018.
Of late, witch-hunting violence is on an upswing in the State with 15 such murders being registered since September 15.
Police are launching anti-witchcraft campaigns from time to time to curb the practice.
These sort of disconcerting incidents are occurring due to poverty, family disputes and absence of health service in some areas, blind beliefs and lack of education, he said.
