Bhubaneswar, Jan 9 (LocalWire) The University Grant Commission (UGC) has directed authorities of all universities in Odisha to prohibit the use of e-cigarettes in their campuses, a senior state official said on Thursday.
The commission in its letter to all vice-chancellors also requested to make the students aware of its bad effects and the harm that the nicotine in any form can do to their growing brain.
The electronic cigarettes are considered alternative tobacco or nicotine delivery product often teenagers were seen using assuming they are less harmful.
The central government last year banned the use, production and sale of such cigarettes saying that they pose a health risk.
The UGC in its letter last week has stated that regular e-cigarette use is not only associated with adverse effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory system but also negatively affects the part of the brain of an average adolescent.
The commission also asked the universities to bring it to the notice of the colleges affiliated to them so that students know about the harmful effects such products.
