Bhubaneshwar: Feb 25(LocalWire)A UN body for gender equality and empowernment has lauded the Naveen Patnaik government for its efforts to secure a 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
In a letter to the chief minister, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women noted that such a commitment would help renew a dialogue on the issue at the national level.
“We commend your thought leadership and support on the fact that the economic and social progress can be sustained, only if half of the population, have a role in the highest decision-making bodies of the state and country,” TOI on Sunday quoted Nishtha Satyam, the country head of the UN body, as saying.
The real progress can only be achieved if women are equal partners in decision-making, the letter noted.
The BJD leaders have reached out to various political parties to ensure passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill. Patnaik has urged the chief ministers of all states to support and pass the bill.
