Kendrapara, Feb 14 (LocalWire) Wife of an undertrial prisoner, who died at a hospital on Thursday, alleged he was beaten up either by jail personnel or by other inmates.
Dhiren Behera (52) of Patalipanka village in Kendrapara district was lodged at a sub-jail here. He died on Thursday at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) while undergoing treatment. The cause of death is yet not known. Autopsy report is awaited.
The deceased had been arrested two years back on charges of raping a minor girl.
“The body will be handed over to his family after autopsy,” said Kendrapara Sub- Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajib Lochan Panda.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s wife said his body had injury marks on the neck, legs and face that indicated a foul play.
“Police and jail officials are trying to hush-up the matter. The death of an inmate has exposed the murky activities going on in the prison,” she alleged.
When contacted, sub-jail superintendent Saroj Biswal said: “There was no injury mark on his body.
He was taken to the hospital after he complained of chest pain.”
